Does drinking water lower blood sugar?

What water actually does

High blood sugar drives fluid loss: above roughly 180–200 mg/dL (10–11 mmol/L) the kidneys spill glucose into urine and pull water with it. Dehydration then concentrates whatever glucose remains in the bloodstream, pushing the reading higher still.

That is a self-reinforcing loop, and water breaks it in two ways. It dilutes the blood, and it restores the kidney perfusion needed to keep clearing glucose into urine.

The effect is real but modest. Expect a helpful nudge, not a correction. Nothing about drinking water addresses why the glucose is not getting into your cells.

Where it genuinely matters

The loop above is the mechanism behind hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state, seen most often in older adults with type 2 diabetes: glucose rises, fluid is lost, dehydration concentrates the blood further, glucose climbs, and it can reach above 600 mg/dL with profound dehydration.

Staying ahead of that during illness is one of the more important pieces of sick-day advice there is. When you are unwell, glucose rises and appetite falls, and people often stop drinking as well as eating.

Practical points

  • Plain water. Anything sweetened defeats the purpose, juice included.
  • Do not restrict fluids to reduce bathroom trips. If high glucose is causing the trips, you are already losing water and cutting back makes it worse.
  • Heavy caffeine nudges glucose up in some people. If you are sensitive, that is worth knowing.
  • Drink to thirst rather than to a target. Thirst is a reliable signal here, and it is often the symptom that brought you to the question in the first place.

One caution: if you have advanced kidney disease or heart failure, fluid intake may be deliberately restricted. Follow the advice you have been given rather than this page.

What actually moves the number

If you want something that works within the hour, the reliable levers are a prescribed correction dose of rapid-acting insulin, and 15 to 30 minutes of walking. Water supports both. Our guide to lowering blood sugar covers what the evidence supports for each.

One exception: do not exercise if you are above 240 mg/dL with ketones present. Without enough insulin, working muscle cannot use glucose and the body makes more ketones instead. Drink water and get medical advice.
