What drinks lower blood sugar?

The short list, ranked honestly

Water. The only one with a real mechanism. Rehydrating dilutes the blood and restores the kidney perfusion needed to clear glucose. Modest effect, no downside, always the right answer.

Unsweetened tea and coffee. Neither lowers blood sugar. Both are fine to drink and both are vastly better than sweetened alternatives. Green tea has some observational association with lower diabetes risk, but the trial evidence for lowering an actual reading is weak.

Apple cider vinegar, diluted. Small trials suggest one to two tablespoons before a carbohydrate-heavy meal modestly reduces the post-meal peak, probably by slowing gastric emptying. Real but small, from small studies, and it prevents a rise rather than reversing one. Always dilute — neat vinegar is hard on tooth enamel and the esophagus.

What to be careful about

Caffeine. In some people caffeine raises glucose by reducing insulin sensitivity for a few hours. Effects vary a lot between individuals. If your morning readings are stubborn and you drink strong coffee, that is worth testing on yourself.

Fruit juice. Frequently marketed as healthy; behaves almost like glucose syrup because there is no fibre or structure to slow it. Even 100% juice with no added sugar spikes hard.

Smoothies. Better than juice because the fibre survives, but blending still speeds absorption compared with eating the whole fruit.

Diet drinks. They do not raise glucose directly. The evidence on longer-term metabolic effects is mixed and genuinely unsettled — reasonable as a step away from sugar-sweetened drinks, not a health food.

Alcohol. Complicated and worth taking seriously. It can cause delayed hypoglycemia hours later, especially on an empty stomach or if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, because the liver prioritises clearing alcohol over releasing glucose. Mixers add sugar on top.

The thing to avoid entirely

Any drink marketed as a blood sugar cure. Supplements in liquid form are subject to the same weak evidence as the pills, and some — berberine in particular — have drug-like interactions, including with metformin and several statins. Tell your doctor what you are taking.
